What do the different difficulty ratings mean?

Each DIY Sports Art kit is assigned a difficulty rating based on how complex the image is and the number of small segments that need to be painted. The tier ratings are below:

Rookie: Simpler to paint, less complex image design with a relatively plain background and a low number of small segments and fine detail work to be painted

Veteran: Medium complexity player image with a simpler background. Will contain a moderate number of small segments and fine detail painting work

All-Pro: A high complexity image design with a large number of small segments and fine detail painting to be done

Hall of Famer: The image design is made up almost entirely of small segments and fine detail painting work. We do not recommend purchasing a Hall of Famer level painting as your first DIY Sports Art kit, unless you are an experienced painter.

Are DIY Sports Art kits easy?

Short answer, yes. It is basically coloring in the lines with a paintbrush. You don’t need any previous painting experience at all. Just be patient and take time to fill in all those colors evenly. However, DIY Sports Art kits do range in difficulty. The more complex paintings with a greater number of small segments that need to be painted are rated in a higher difficulty tier and require more patience. Please refer to the FAQ on difficulty rating for more information.

How do I get started with my DIY Sports Art kit?

Here are 5 tips to help on how to get started with your DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Sports Art kit:

  1. Find a comfortable well-lit room with a desk or table to paint on. Clear the space of anything that should not get dirty or wet – paint always seems to find its way onto something other than the canvas.
  2. Set up your painting area by getting out your canvas, paints, paintbrushes, a container of water to wash your brushes, some paper towels and your magnifying glass (a magnifying glass can be very helpful for painting small areas. Many of our customers swear by them).
  3. Take a digital picture of your canvas with your phone. This will give you a permanent reference that you can zoom in on that you can never spill paint on, tear or lose.
  4. Dip the tip of each paint brush into a paint pod and take a few practice strokes on a blank piece of paper. This will give you a feel for the paint brush, their sizes and respective stroke.
  5. Be patient, take your time, and most importantly have as much fun when creating your masterpiece as possible, while enjoying the calming and stress relieving benefits of painting.

Now you’re ready to have fun and start your painting journey.

For a more detailed list of instructions and tips, please refer to instructions included in your product box, this document, or the Product Tutorials & Tips section of the FAQ.

Will I need a magnifying glass?

Well, that depends on your eyesight and the complexity of the design that you are painting. A magnifying glass can be very helpful and several of our customers swear by using one – even people with great eyesight can use a little help from a magnifying glass when painting small areas and fine detail.

Do I need additional paintbrushes to complete my DIY Sports Art kit?

No. Every DIY Sports Art kit is all-inclusive and comes with 3 paintbrushes to use for your painting. However, we do highly recommend getting an extra set of Premium Paintbrushes.  The extra paintbrushes allow you to spend more time painting and less time washing. The Premium Paintbrushes also give you a more professional experience, allow for painting finer detail, and a more comfortable painting experience because of their ergonomic design.

How long will it take for me to complete my painting?

The time to complete your DIY Sports Art kit will vary depending on how fast of painter you are, and the hours or time applied to working on it. These kits are a relaxing art form which can be completed quickly over a couple days or enjoyed a little at a time over a series of weeks. One thing is for sure, when you finish your painting, it will be something you can be proud of, call your own and had fun doing.

Product Tutorials & Tips
Instructions and Tips

For a more detailed list of instructions and tips, please refer to this document.

Once I have set up my painting area, what should I do next?

Moisten your brush before putting it in the paint. Dip the brush in a cup of water and then dry the excess water off on a paper towel before dipping the tip of your brush into the paint pod. Test out your brushes on a spare piece of paper to get a feel for the brush stroke & size. Once you have tested your brushes, you are ready to being your painting journey.

Where on my canvas should I start painting first?

Generally, it is recommended to work from the top-left to the bottom-right of the canvas (or top-right to bottom-left if you are left-handed). This helps you avoid your arm hitting wet paint on the canvas and creating smudges.

What shapes on the canvas should I paint first?

There are no rules, find what works for you and paint your heart out! Though we recommend starting with large areas first. Starting with the large areas first will help you get used to the paintbrushes and refine your brush stroke before moving onto smaller areas. It also helps you better visualize how the final painting will turn out.

Is there a particular order I should use the paints in?

No. There isn’t a particular order to use the paint colors in, but we do recommend that you only paint one color at a time. Then wash and dry your brush completely before moving on to a different color.

Can I paint more than 1 color at a time?

We recommend to only use one paint color at a time for 2 reasons. This will reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning brushes if you are frequently changing colors. Also, water-based acrylic paints dry quickly, so if you’re using only 1 paint color at a time, the others can remain closed and prevent them from drying.

How should I dip the paintbrush in the paint pod?

Dip the tip: A paintbrush requires a surprisingly small amount of paint to work so only dip the very tip in. While it is tempting to dunk the whole brush in the paint, using just the tip of the paintbrush will increase the precision of your strokes and help you stay within the lines. It also prevents paint from drying up in the bristles closer to the handle. Using just the tip will also conserve paint so you will have plenty leftover for touch-ups!

What if I painted an area the wrong color?

If you painted an area with the wrong color – don’t fret.  Just allow the area to dry, then repaint the area using the correct color.

What should I do if I can still see the number behind a painted area?

If you have applied a layer of paint and the number is still visible, simply apply another layer of paint to that section.

Should I wash my paintbrush when switching colors?

Yes. Never skip from one color to the other without first cleaning your brushes thoroughly. To achieve a vibrant and crisp painting, clean your brushes well between colors so that the paint applies smoothly and without being tainted by another color.

Should I wait for one color to dry before starting the next color?

Yes. Be patient and let the first color dry before starting a new one. Acrylic paints dry quick and this usually takes about 5- 15 minutes. Waiting before starting a new color helps to avoid smudges and paint colors accidently mixing.

How do I keep the paint pods from drying out?

The paint is a water-based acrylic (not harmful to water or marine life).  However, it does dry quickly, so keep the pods closed if you are not using them or leaving them for a while.

What should I do if the paint is too thick?

If you find that a paint pod has dried up a little or a little too thick, add a drop or 2 of warm water and mix it with a toothpick to bring it back to life.

How can I paint very small areas on the canvas?

Keep a toothpick handy. The fine point of a toothpick makes filling very tiny areas much easier and more controlled than even the finest paintbrush.

What should I don once my painting is done?

Yay! Be proud of the artwork you have created.

After you are done painting, you are ready for polish and hanging of your fan art masterpiece. Once your painting is completely dry, you can apply the polish lightly over the entire canvas. The polish adds a layer of protection and gives the painting a finished sheen. Using the wall hangers provided in the kit, your painting is now ready for hanging and showing off to the world.

We love seeing the artwork our customers create. We encourage you to send us a picture of finished painting over email or through social channels.
